Bordering the San Andrés Semetabaj village in the Province of Sololá, above Lake Atitlan, UVG recently acquired its latest site as a generous donation of land from the Mack family – an American family based in California with long-standing ties to Guatemala. UVG intends the site to be used for forestry, agriculture, and ecology research projects, as well as remain home to a most significant archeological site of Mayan mounds. San Andrés SemetabajJoint efforts by the Department of Archeology at UVG and Stanford University have confirmed it to be one of the oldest Mayan sites in the highlands of Guatemala. Results of studies published indicate the age of the Plaza Maya, on site, as predominantly Pre-Classic (first millennium B.C.). Currently it is undeveloped land and there is an exploratory archeological excavation on-going and land use mapping and development processes underway. This project will provide scholarships to UVG-Altiplano students whose studies include community service work supporting this project. Current fundraising efforts focus on continued archeological work and land use/mapping efforts, expanded scholarship opportunities for UVG students and their involvement in this project, as well as expanded initiatives including community outreach projects, agricultural demonstration sites in coordination with work funded by USDA with UVG at the Altiplano campus, the construction of a field work station and/or Cultural Center, and other concepts currently being discussed and developed. Stay tuned for more updates here on our website. It is the long-term goal of the Foundation to leverage our initial fundraising efforts as merely the catalyst for much more significant funding from additional sources to increase our impact.
